Minds First is run by Kerry Munro, a registered Occupational Therapist & accredited Mindfulness Practitioner. Kerry’s own life experiences have given her a real passion to make a genuine difference and enhance people’s lives.
Kerry’s experience of working in the field of mental health, combined with her knowledge and passion for teaching mindfulness, enables her to support wellbeing in the workplace and provide employees with tools to help their mental wellbeing.
My fascination with mental health began as many others’ do – by experiencing it myself. Suffering with episodes of depression and anxiety since my early teens, I gained first-hand experience of how powerful the human mind can be and it made me realise how important it was to me to find out more.
Cue my professional career! I got my first job in mental health over 12 years ago, as a healthcare assistant in an adult mental health hospital. This inspired me to complete a BSc in Occupational Therapy. I’ve since worked as an Occupational Therapist, in mental health services for the NHS.
As an OT, I was most interested in the Biopsychosocial model of health; a holistic approach to human behaviour and illness, which looks at the interconnections between biology, psychology, and socio-environmental factors. I have always been particularly passionate about early intervention; inspiring me to explore and research different methods that would help promote overall wellbeing and may prevent deterioration in mental health, for both the patients that I was working with as well as myself.
This is what led me down the path of Mindfulness. This practice has played a significant part in my on-going recovery and has completely reframed my outlook on both my health and life in general. Mindfulness isn’t just a formal practice or skill, it’s a way of living. It’s through Mindfulness that I have learnt that I am not my thoughts. In fact, often my thoughts couldn’t be further away from the truth. This has had a profound impact on my health, happiness and wellbeing.
After several years of practicing and experiencing the benefits for myself, I decided to turn my passion for mindfulness into a career, by training to teach it to others. Interwoven with my professional background in mental health Occupational Therapy and my desire to use my own experiences to help others; Minds First was created.
Outside of my passion for mindfulness, I love yoga, chocolate, nature, hiking, wild swimming, travel, porridge, discovering new songs on Spotify, and most of all, surrounding myself with the people I love.
